Stop 1. Lake Bumbunga

Loch Eel Monster

Lake Bumbunga, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia

Distance from Adelaide: Approximately 135 km (1 hour 45 minutes)

Before reaching the Yorke Peninsula, make a stop at one of South Australia's most photographed natural attractions - Lake Bumbunga. Located just outside the small town of Lochiel, this spectacular salt lake is famous for its ever-changing colours, ranging from soft pinks to vibrant shades of bubblegum pink, depending on the season, weather conditions and time of day.

• Capture photos of the famous pink salt lake. The colours are best on warm, sunny days from September - November.

• Keep an eye out for the quirky 'Loch-Eel Monster', a giant sculpture rising from the lake inspired by local folklore.

• Take a short walk along the edge of the lake to appreciate the unique salt-crusted landscape and wide-open views.

• If you're travelling with a drone and it's safe to fly, Lake Bumbunga looks particularly impressive from above, where the colourful salt pans and surrounding farmland create striking patterns.

STOP 2: Port Broughton

Distance from Lake Bumbunga: Approximately 110 km (1 hour 20 minutes)

Nestled on the eastern side of the Spencer Gulf, Port Broughton is a relaxed seaside town known for its long jetty, calm waters and laid-back coastal atmosphere. It's the perfect first overnight stop on your Yorke Peninsula road trip, giving you time to unwind before continuing further down the peninsula.

Whether you're looking to enjoy a sunset stroll, try your luck fishing from the jetty or simply relax by the waterfront, Port Broughton is well worth adding to your itinerary.

One of the highlights is being able to walk straight from your campsite to the foreshore to watch the sunset over Spencer Gulf.

STOP 3. Wallaroo

Distance from Port Broughton: Approximately 75 km (1 hour)

Located on the Copper Coast, Wallaroo is one of the Yorke Peninsula's most popular coastal towns, combining beautiful beaches, rich history and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. Once a thriving copper mining port, today it's known for its family-friendly beaches, waterfront dining and picturesque marina, making it a fantastic stop on your Yorke Peninsula road trip.

Where to Stay - Wallaroo Tourist Park

Positioned just steps from the beach, Wallaroo Tourist Park is one of the best places to stay on the Copper Coast. With spacious powered sites, modern facilities and direct access to the waterfront, it's an excellent base for both motorhome and caravan travellers.

The park is only a short drive from the town centre, making it easy to explore Wallaroo's attractions while enjoying a peaceful beachfront stay.

Perched on the south-eastern tip of the Yorke Peninsula, Edithburgh is one of our favourite seaside towns on the peninsula. With its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful coastline and friendly country charm, it's the perfect place to slow down before continuing to Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park.

Whether you're enjoying a walk along the waterfront, spotting seals from the historic jetty or settling in for a classic pub meal, Edithburgh is well worth spending a night.

Where to Stay - Edithburgh Caravan Park

We highly recommend staying at Edithburgh Caravan Park. Situated right on the waterfront, the park offers spacious powered sites with the coastline just steps away. It's also within easy walking distance of the town centre, making it easy to explore cafés, restaurants and local attractions without needing to move your vehicle.

One of our favourite things about staying here was being able to walk straight from the caravan park onto the coastal walking trails, taking in the ocean views and fresh sea air.

Best Things to Do IN EDITHBURGH

• Visit the historic Edithburgh Jetty and keep an eye out for the resident seals that are often seen swimming below.

• Walk along the scenic waterfront and explore the numerous coastal walking trails around town.

• Swim in the Edithburgh Tidal Pool during the warmer months.

• Browse the small local shops and enjoy the relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Best Places to Eat IN EDITHBURGH

If you're visiting on a Sunday, make sure you stop by the Trowbridge Hotel. Their traditional Sunday roast is one of the best meals we had on the Yorke Peninsula and is well worth planning your visit around. The hotel also serves generous pub meals throughout the week in a welcoming country atmosphere.

Edithburgh is the perfect place to base yourself before exploring Yorketown and Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, both just a short drive away.

STOP 5: Yorketown

Distance from Edithburgh: Approximately 20 km (15 minutes)

Located in the heart of the southern Yorke Peninsula, Yorketown is a small country town that makes a worthwhile stop on your way to Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park. While it's often overlooked by travellers heading straight for the coast, Yorketown is home to colourful silo art, local history and the unique Salt Lake Trail, making it a great place to stretch your legs before continuing south.

STOP 6: Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park

Distance from Yorketown: Approximately 55 km (45–50 minutes)

Saving the best until last, Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park is the crown jewel of the Yorke Peninsula. Covering the peninsula's south-western tip, the park is renowned for its rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and abundant wildlife. You won’t want to. miss!

Getting There…

Most of the park's main attractions are easily accessible by road, making it suitable for motorhomes, caravans and 2WD vehicles. The main tourist route through the park includes approximately 16 km of sealed road, with around 10 km of unsealed road on the western side. The unsealed sections are generally well maintained, but it's always worth checking current road conditions before travelling.

• Cape Spencer Lighthouse - Is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the park. The panoramic coastal views are incredible, and during the cooler months you may even spot migrating southern right whales offshore.

• Pondalowie Bay Lookout - Offers sweeping views across the rugged coastline and world-famous surf beaches below. Even if you're not a surfer, it's worth stopping to admire the scenery and watch the waves roll in.

• Ethel Beach & Shipwreck - A short walk leads to Ethel Beach, where you'll find the remains of the Ethel Shipwreck, which ran aground during a storm in 1904. Today, parts of the ship's steel hull are still visible in the sand, creating one of the Yorke Peninsula's most photographed historic landmarks.

• Wildlife Spotting - Keep an eye out for native wildlife throughout the park. Kangaroos, emus and a variety of birdlife are commonly seen, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon.

💡 Travel Tips

• Allow at LEAST half a day, although a full day is ideal or stay overnight if you'd like to explore multiple beaches and lookouts.

• Bring plenty of water and snacks, as facilities within the park are limited.

• Mobile reception can be patchy in some areas.

• Wear sturdy footwear if you're planning on exploring any walking trails or coastal lookouts.

• Always check road conditions before travelling, especially if you're towing a caravan or visiting after wet weather.
