Planning a Flinders Ranges road trip from Adelaide?
Just a few hours north of South Australia's capital, the Flinders Ranges is one of Australia's most spectacular outback destinations, known for its rugged mountain ranges, ancient landscapes, incredible hikes, and rich pastoral history.
Whether you're travelling by motorhome, caravan, or car, this itinerary covers our favourite places to stay, scenic lookouts, hikes, and local food as we explored the region from Jamestown through to Wilpena Pound and Melrose.
While a 4WD opens up even more of the Flinders Ranges, don't let that put you off if you're travelling in a motorhome or caravan. We explored the region in our motorhome and still experienced many of the highlights. Just be sure to check the weather and current road conditions before setting off, as rain can make some unsealed roads and 4WD tracks difficult or inaccessible. If a track is marked as 4WD only, don't attempt it without the appropriate vehicle.

Road Trip Overview
Route: Adelaide → Jamestown → Melrose → Quorn → Hawker → Wilpena Pound
Distance: Approx. 500km one way
Duration: We recommend allowing 5 – 7 days to fully experience the Flinders Ranges. While you can drive the route in a weekend, spending a few extra days gives you time to enjoy the hikes, scenic drives, and incredible landscapes.
Best time to go: April to October is the ideal time to visit, with cooler temperatures perfect for hiking and exploring. We travelled during winter and loved the crisp mornings, changing colours, and comfortable walking conditions.
Road Trip Tip: Most roads along this itinerary are suitable for motorhomes and caravans. However, some lookouts and attractions require a 4WD, and heavy rain can make certain unsealed roads inaccessible. Always check current road conditions before travelling.

Jamestown – Gateway to the Southern Flinders Ranges
Located around 210km north of Adelaide (approximately a 2.5-hour drive), Jamestown is the perfect first stop on your Flinders Ranges road trip.
With its tree-lined streets, heritage buildings, and welcoming country atmosphere, it's a great place to ease into your adventure before heading further north into the ranges.
Where to stay: The Park Jamestown
Recently renovated, The Park Jamestown quickly became one of our favourite caravan parks in South Australia. It offers spacious sites, modern amenities, beautiful autumn and winter colours, friendly owners, and a lovely reception building showcasing local produce and artwork from regional artists.
Best Things to Do in jamestown
• RM Williams Birthplace – Visit the birthplace of one of Australia's most iconic outback figures and learn about the early life of R.M. Williams.
• Explore Jamestown – Wander the heritage streets, boutique shops, and local cafés.
• Southern Flinders Scenic Drive – Enjoy rolling farmland and beautiful countryside as you begin your journey north.
Best Places to Eat in jamestown
The Commercial Hotel is well worth visiting for dinner. With beautiful heritage architecture and elevated country pub meals, it's a step above your typical pub while still keeping its welcoming country charm.
Melrose – Australia's Oldest Mountain Town
Located around 80km from Jamestown (approximately a 1-hour drive), Melrose sits at the base of Mount Remarkable and is one of South Australia's best outdoor destinations.
This charming country town is famous for hiking, mountain biking, and relaxed country hospitality.
Where to stay: Melrose Caravan Park
Perfectly located within walking distance of town, Melrose Caravan Park provides an excellent base for exploring Mount Remarkable National Park.
Best Things to Do in melrose
• Mount Remarkable Summit Hike – One of South Australia's best day hikes with incredible views across the Southern Flinders Ranges.
• Mountain Bike Trails – Melrose is recognised as one of Australia's premier mountain biking destinations, with trails suitable for all skill levels.
• Explore the Historic Town – Browse local shops, galleries, and heritage buildings dating back to the 1800s.
Best Places to Eat in melrose
Don't miss Jacka Brothers Brewery, especially during winter. Their wood-fired pizzas, locally brewed beer, and mulled wine create the perfect atmosphere after a day exploring the ranges.
Quorn – Heritage Railways & Country Charm
Located around 50km from Melrose (approximately a 40-minute drive), Quorn is one of the Flinders Ranges' most historic towns and makes a fantastic stop before heading deeper into the national park.
Where to stay: Quorn Caravan Park (or continue to Hawker/Wilpena if preferred).

• Pichi Richi Railway – One of South Australia's most famous heritage railways, offering unforgettable steam train journeys through the Flinders Ranges.
• Explore the Historic Main Street – Discover heritage buildings, boutique shops, and local galleries.

Scones with Quandong Jam, Quandong Cafe
A visit to the Quandong Café is a must. Famous for its homemade quandong pies, cakes, and local produce, it's one of the best food stops in the Flinders Ranges!
Hawker – Gateway to Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park
Located around 65km from Quorn (approximately a 45-minute drive), Hawker is the final major town before entering the national park. It's the perfect place to fuel up, stock the fridge, and gather supplies before heading into the heart of the Flinders Ranges.

• Jeff Morgan Gallery – Home to the incredible Wilpena Panorama, one of Australia's largest circular landscape paintings.
• Visitor Information Centre – Great for maps, current road conditions, and local advice.
• Scenic Drives – The drive north from Hawker offers some of the first truly dramatic mountain scenery of the trip.
Wilpena Pound – The Heart of the Flinders Ranges
Located around 55km from Hawker (approximately a 45-minute drive), Wilpena Pound is the centrepiece of the Flinders Ranges and one of Australia's most spectacular natural landscapes.vSurrounded by rugged mountain ranges and ancient geology dating back hundreds of millions of years, it's an unforgettable place to explore.
Where to stay: Wilpena Pound Resort Discovery Parks
Located inside the national park, Wilpena Pound Resort is the perfect base for exploring the area. Accommodation ranges from powered caravan sites to glamping tents and hotel rooms.
Travelling in a motorhome meant we couldn't access every attraction, but there is still plenty to see. Just be mindful that heavy rain can affect some roads and 4WD tracks.
Best Things to Do in wilpena pound
• St Mary’s Peak or Mount Ohlssen Bagge Hike – One of the best walks in the park, rewarding you with spectacular panoramic views over Wilpena Pound.
• Arkaroo Rock Art Walk – Discover ancient Aboriginal rock art while learning about the cultural significance of the Adnyamathanha people.
• Razorback Lookout – One of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Flinders Ranges. Accessible by 4WD only.
• Kanyaka Ruins – Explore the fascinating remains of one of South Australia's oldest pastoral stations and learn about early European settlement in the region.
• Scenic Flights – For a completely different perspective, consider a flight over Wilpena Pound to appreciate the immense scale of this natural amphitheatre.
The Flinders Ranges is unlike anywhere else in South Australia. From charming country towns and historic railways to ancient mountain ranges and unforgettable hikes, this road trip offers something for every traveller.
