Below, we share our favourite stops and must-do experiences along the way and a free downloadable map for you!

Byron Bay: Popular Beaches, Coastal Walks & Good Food

From Ballina, we continued just 30 mins north to the ever popular Byron Bay, staying at Byron Bay Discovery Parks, a spacious and well-equipped base with bike hire, 2 pools, tennis courts, outdoor bbq’s, food stalls AND an epic Kombi bar! Byron Bay is a vibrant coastal town known for its relaxed, bohemian vibe, world-class surf, artisanal food scene, and stunning natural beauty.

A must-visit is the Cape Byron Lighthouse & Coastal Walk, which offers sweeping ocean views and a chance to spot whales during the season. I recommend doing this at sunrise, it is magical! The lighthouse sits at Australia’s easternmost point, and the surrounding walking trails are a must do, and provide breathtaking views over rugged cliffs and beaches.

For beach time, Main Beach is patrolled and perfect for surfing or a casual swim. We actually ended up swimming here 4 days in a row. It was THAT beautiful and had the clearest water we’ve seen up the East Coast! Surfers will also love The Pass, a famous spot with long, rolling waves suitable for both beginners and more experienced riders. Check out the view up the stairs of The Pass, it is magnificent and absolutely worth it!

Food and local experiences are highlights in Byron Bay. The Farm is great for brekkie or brunch, it’s a working farm with cafés, markets, and fresh produce, offering a taste of rural Byron Bay life. Other recommendations include Folk, Combi, Light Years, Bang Bang, Oyster Bar, Blue Cow gelato and of course you can’t go past the Byron Bay Hotel, right on the beach front and great vibes! If you’re visiting over the weekend, the Byron Bay Markets are also the perfect place to pick up handmade goods, fresh produce, and soak in the local culture.

Tip: Arrive early at the lighthouse for sunrise and quieter trails, check tide times before swimming or surfing, and bring cash for the markets.

Tweed Heads: A Relaxed Coastal Start

Just one hour north of Byron Bay, Tweed Heads is the perfect first stop. We based ourselves at Pyramid Holiday Park while not directly within walking distance to attractions, it’s easy to drive around and explore.

Start your morning with a waterfront walk and stop by the Captain Cook Memorial, soaking up the laid-back coastal atmosphere. For a beach break, head to Rainbow Beach, then grab an iced American cold brew from local café Sundevil — trust us on this one.

A must-do nearby is driving 20 minutes south to Fingal Head. Visit the Fingal Head Lighthouse, then wander through the coastal rainforest trail to see dramatic volcanic rock formations formed over 20 million years ago.

Don’t miss Dreamtime Beach for the views — but note it’s unpatrolled and not safe for swimming. Instead, walk 500 metres around to Fingal Bay Beach, which is patrolled during summer weekends and ideal for a safe swim.

Gold Coast: Beaches, Adventure & Iconic Attractions

The Gold Coast is one of our favourite stops on the Byron Bay to Sunshine Coast road trip. We stayed at Nobby Beach Holiday Village, a fantastic caravan park with an adult water slide, perfect for a fun and relaxing base. The location is ideal — just minutes from surf beaches, coastal walks, and all the city’s action.

There’s so much to do here! If you’re after thrills, the Gold Coast is home to world-famous theme parks, perfect for a full day of rides, shows, and family fun. Nature lovers will adore Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can meet koalas, hand-feed kangaroos, and explore the lush bushland.

For coastal walks and Instagram-worthy views, head to the Rainbow Steps and Burleigh Heads Lookout. The beachfront cycleway is another highlight — a flat, scenic route connecting several beaches, making it easy to explore by bike.

If shopping or city vibes are your thing, don’t miss Surfers Paradise for the classic Gold Coast energy and Pacific Fair, which offers everything from boutique brands to big-name stores. Of course, spending time on the beaches — from Nobby Beach to Burleigh — is a must. The combination of sun, surf, and city attractions makes the Gold Coast an exciting and versatile stop on the drive north.

Tip: Arrive early at popular spots like Burleigh Heads Lookout or Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to avoid crowds and get the best light for photos.

Brisbane: River & City

Next up was Brisbane, where we stayed at Brisbane Holiday Village, a park packed with amenities. With two pools, an 18-hole putt putt course, tennis courts, and large outdoor BBQ areas, it’s a great base whether you’re travelling as a couple or with family.

Brisbane itself offers a completely different pace to the coast. Explore South Bank, wander along the Brisbane River, check out the city’s rooftop bars, or spend time discovering hidden laneway cafés and markets.

It’s the perfect mix of urban adventure and relaxed Queensland living.

Crows Nest: A Hidden Hinterland Gem

After the city buzz, heading inland to Crows Nest was such a refreshing change! This is a hidden gem. On the way, stop in Toowoomba and visit Picnic Point Parklands and Lookout for sweeping valley views and great picnic spot.

We stayed at Crows Nest Tourist Park, and it was genuinely a 10/10 experience. Recently taken over by new owners, the park has been beautifully revamped. There’s a pool, a large communal fire pit, spacious grassy sites (so you’re not crammed in), great amenities — and we were even surprised with freshly delivered cheesecake from the owner, who’s a chef!

In town, visit Lily’s Artisan or My Little Blueberry, explore the Crows Nest Soda Factory (an absolute must), and browse the local op/book shop - this is a must if you a book lover!

For nature lovers, Crows Nest National Park is the highlight. We completed the Koonin Trail (4.5km return), which includes Crows Nest Falls Lookout and the stunning Blue Pool. The swimming spots are beautiful, and the views over the valleys are incredible — a total contrast to the coastline you’ve just left behind.

Sunshine Coast: Beachside Living, Coastal Walks & Hinterland Adventures

The Sunshine Coast is the perfect final stretch of the Byron Bay to Sunshine Coast road trip.
We stayed in Mooloolaba at Alex Beach Cabins, located right on Alex Beach - an amazing spot where you can walk right to the beach, shops, pub and cafes.

One of the best ways to explore the area is along the Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway, a scenic oceanside trail that runs along the coastline. It’s perfect for walking or cycling and connects several beaches with beautiful ocean views the entire way. Mooloolaba itself is a great place to spend an afternoon. Wander through the shops along the esplanade, grab a coffee by the water, or relax on the beach before heading out to explore more of the region.

A must-visit while you’re here is Noosa and the stunning Noosa National Park. The coastal walk here is one of the best in Australia, with beautiful ocean views, secluded coves, and a good chance of spotting dolphins or koalas along the trail.

For something a little different, head inland to the Glass House Mountains. Hiking Mt Ngungun is a popular and rewarding trail, with incredible panoramic views from the summit across the surrounding peaks and countryside.

Back on the water, Saltwater Eco Tours offers a fantastic way to explore the region’s rivers and wildlife, combining Indigenous culture, nature, and scenic cruising.

And of course, no Sunshine Coast trip is complete without visiting Australia Zoo, founded by Steve Irwin. It’s one of the most famous wildlife parks in the country and a great place to see Australian animals up close while learning about conservation.

Tip: Start hikes like Mt Ngungun early in the morning to avoid the heat and catch the best views, and arrive early at Noosa National Park to secure parking and enjoy the trails before the crowds.

From Byron Bay to the Sunshine Coast this road is packed with inland escapes and stunning coastal scenery!

Next up, we’re continuing north, leaving the Sunshine Coast behind and heading towards the Fraser Coast, where calm turquoise waters, island adventures, and some unforgettable wildlife experiences await.

Stay tuned… the next chapter of this coastal road trip is about to get even better!
